The goal of this funding opportunity is to stimulate the use of existing human datasets for well-focused secondary analyses to investigate novel scientific ideas or new models, systems, tools, methods, or technologies that have the potential for significant impact on biomedical or biobehavioral research in areas relevant to the NHLBI mission. This FOA actively supports the use of existing database resources to conduct additional analyses secondary to a project's originally-intended primary purpose. Applications may be related to, but must be distinct from, the specific aims of the original data collection. It will not support the collection of new data.

Data Update for HCT for SCD

Data have been updated for the Hematopoietic Cell Transplant for Sickle Cell Disease (HCT for SCD) study. This update includes an additional year of data.

Data available for request now include allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplants for sickle cell disease (Hb SS and Hb Sβ thalassemia) in the United States from January 1991 to December 2020, as well as follow-up data through May 2021.

Data have been updated for the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) study including cohort follow-up data through 2017. Now available are data from v1-v6 examination cycles, collated annual follow-up communication data for contact years 2-29, and follow-up for mortality, heart disease, and stroke events through 2017 in addition to 7 ancillary studies.


NHLBI Cure Sickle Cell Initiative

The NHLBI Cure Sickle Cell Initiative has established a web-based publicly available Metadata Catalog of curated data elements and study documentation from past and current studies of sickle cell disease populations. The catalog has over 10,000 data variables from 16 studies organized into searchable categories. Tools to help investigators find data elements and determine the availability of common data for cross-study analysis are provided. Visit the catalog at https://curesicklecell.rti.org/.

Biorepository COVID-19 Resources

In collaboration with the NHLBI Biorepository and the Trans-NIH AgingResearchBiobank Steering Committee, NHLBI has developed COVID-19 Biorepository FAQs to serve as a resource/reference for the scientific community. This includes descriptions of enhanced procedures employed by the Biorepository to ensure staff safety and to mitigate the potential of airborne exposure to COVID-19 virus particles, as well as references to CDC shipping guidelines for suspected and confirmed SARS-CoV-2 patient specimens, cultures, or isolates.
